Irvine’s, Zimbabwe’s leading producer of table eggs and poultry products, celebrated this year’s World Egg Day by donating more than 3,600 eggs to learners and teaching staff at Ardno Primary School in Mashonaland East. Every learner and teacher went home with half a dozen eggs.

World Egg Day falls on the second Friday of October each year. This year it was on Friday, 9 October, and it was the day’s 30th anniversary. The day raises awareness of how nutritious eggs are and the part they play in healthy diets and food security. This year’s theme, “Protein That Powers and Protects,” focused on eggs as an affordable source of quality protein, especially for growing children.

A morning of learning and celebration

The morning brought the school community together. Learners took centre stage with poems and speeches about eggs and good nutrition. Guests heard from the school’s headmaster, Mr Mambodza, and Irvine’s Quality Assurance Executive, Lois Ngonyamo, gave a talk on food safety. The celebrations finished with breakfast and entertainment for the learners.

Irvine’s Commercial Executive, Mrs Joyce Machigere, said the donation was about more than food.

“Today, as we hand over ten boxes of eggs and every learner walks away with half a dozen eggs of their own, we are not just giving food. We are giving health, energy, and a commitment to the well-being of our community,” she said.

Irvine’s Sales Executive, Tawanda Chirisa, explained to the learners why eggs matter: “The protein in eggs powers you. It helps you grow, gives you energy to play, and keeps your mind sharp in the classroom.”

More than six decades of feeding the nation

Speaking on behalf of Irvine’s Managing Executive Director, Mr Godfrey Gwainda, Mrs Machigere said the donation reflects the company’s long-standing commitment to the communities it serves. Irvine’s started in 1957, when Bill Irvine and his wife began raising day-old chicks in their spare bedroom. Today it is Zimbabwe’s largest supplier of table eggs and produces more than 20 million dozen eggs a year.

“Our purpose has stayed the same: to bring affordable, quality protein to every Zimbabwean family,” she said.

Irvine’s also supports children’s and welfare organisations across Zimbabwe through other community initiatives.

Telling the story

Multimedia supported the World Egg Day celebration with media engagement, on-site coordination and publicity. The story ran in The Herald, NewsDay and the Daily News, as well as on online platforms and in a print advertorial.

Multimedia is proud to have been Irvine’s marketing and public relations partner over the years. We help tell the story of the company’s initiatives and its ongoing contribution to communities across Zimbabwe.
