Harare, Zimbabwe – May 10, 2025
Castle Lager marked a significant milestone this year as it celebrated 130 years of brewing excellence. The celebration coincided with the 65th edition of the Castle Tankard, Zimbabwe’s premier horse racing event, held at the Borrowdale Racecourse on May 10, 2025.
The Castle Tankard, one of the most anticipated events on the Southern African horse racing calendar, continues to draw large crowds and top competitors. Sponsored by the brand Castle Lager, the event has grown to become a flagship occasion that combines sport, entertainment, and brand celebration.
The theme for this year, ‘The Legacy Continues’, is a phrase reflecting optimism and pride in Castle Lager’s long-standing brewing journey. “This is the big race we all race for—the Castle Tankard, proudly sponsored by the iconic brand, Castle Lager,” said a Zim Racing Club executive member during the event.
This year’s race saw 15 horses compete in a gruelling 2000-meter challenge. Action Zone emerged victorious, clinching the prestigious prize. Jaeger Moon and Master TikTok secured second and third places, respectively. Last year’s winner, Raffles, did not participate in this year’s event, while the 2023 champion, Ideal View, was among the fan favourites going into the race. Action Zone walked away with $ 25,000, the second and third got $ 12,500 and $ 7,500, respectively.
Beyond the track, the celebration continued with an electrifying after-party featuring live performances from top local artists, including Alick Macheso, Oriyano, Nisha TS, Enzo Ishall, Chillspot, and Delroy Shewe. The festival atmosphere drew thousands of attendees, many of whom return annually for the experience.
“We always mark our calendars for the Castle Tankard. This is my seventh year attending, and it never disappoints,” said Mr. Chipasi, one of the enthusiastic racegoers enjoying the festivities.
Mike Chiriseri, a young fan from Domboshava, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to attend the event:
"Ndipo pega patotombouuyawo kumaLive emabig artists. We always wait for this day. Thanks to Castle Lager—murambe makadaro, musatikanganwe." (“This is the only time we get to see big artists perform live. We always look forward to this day. Thank you Castle Lager—please keep doing this and don’t forget us.”)
Throughout the day, attendees had the opportunity to sample a wide range of beverages offered by Delta Beverages at designated tent stations. Brands featured included Chibuku, Shumba Maheu, Sable Lager, Coca-Cola, Misty, among others.
The Zim Racing Club and Delta Corporation extended their congratulations to the winning teams and expressed appreciation to all who contributed to making May 10th a memorable celebration of sport and heritage.
In a statement, Castle Lager said, “The Castle tankard is more than just a race, it’s a symbol of coming together as a nation.”
