Japan Joins OTAKUKON: Anime, Manga and Culture Bring Zimbabwe and Japan Together

HARARE, Zimbabwe – Anime, manga and Japanese culture took centre stage at OTAKUKON, bringing together fans, creatives and cultural enthusiasts for a vibrant celebration of Japanese popular culture and growing cultural ties between Zimbabwe and Japan.

The festival provided a platform for young people and creatives to connect through their shared interest in anime, manga, Japanese traditions and contemporary Japanese culture, while giving attendees opportunities to learn more about Japan through interactive experiences.

The Embassy of Japan participated in the festival, supporting activities designed to deepen understanding of Japanese culture and strengthen people-to-people relations between Japan and Zimbabwe.

Anime and Manga Connecting Zimbabwe and Japan

Speaking at OTAKUKON, the Ambassador of Japan expressed appreciation to the festival organisers, partners and the growing community of anime and manga enthusiasts who helped make the event possible.

The Ambassador highlighted the ability of Japanese popular culture to connect people irrespective of geographical or linguistic differences.

“Anime and Manga have the power to connect our hearts across borders and languages.”

The Ambassador also highlighted opportunities that could emerge when Zimbabwean creativity is combined with Japan's established anime and manga industry, creating new possibilities for artists while strengthening cultural relations between the two countries.

Japan Corner Brings Japanese Culture to Life

One of the major attractions at OTAKUKON was the Japan Corner, where festival-goers experienced different elements of Japanese culture through a series of interactive activities.

Visitors had an opportunity to make onigiri, a traditional Japanese rice ball, with Chef Arakida.

Other cultural activities included:

• Japanese calligraphy

The Japan Corner also served as an information hub for Zimbabweans interested in learning more about opportunities connected to Japan.

Visitors could access information about Japanese Government Scholarships, online Japanese-language lessons, free Japanese films available online and Japanese manga.

Bill Masuku Leads Manga Workshop

Zimbabwe's growing creative talent was also showcased through a manga workshop led by Zimbabwean manga artist Bill Masuku.

The workshop was sponsored by the Embassy of Japan and gave participants an opportunity to learn more about manga illustration and storytelling from an established Zimbabwean creative.

Masuku's work is also expected to be published in Japan through a programme supported by Japanese companies, demonstrating the growing potential for collaboration between Zimbabwean artists and Japan's manga industry.

The initiative highlights how creative industries can become an important bridge between Zimbabwe and Japan while opening international opportunities for local talent.

Japanese Animation Featured at OTAKUKON

Festival-goers were also treated to a screening of Magic Candies, an Academy Award-nominated Japanese animated short film, courtesy of Toei Animation.

The screening added another dimension to the festival, allowing attendees to experience Japanese animation while demonstrating the global reach and influence of the country's creative industries.

OTAKUKON Builds a Platform for Cultural Exchange

Beyond entertainment, OTAKUKON demonstrated the ability of anime, manga, and the creative arts to promote cultural exchange.

The festival brought together young people, artists, cultural organisations and fans around a shared passion while creating opportunities for Zimbabweans to gain a deeper understanding of Japan.

The Embassy of Japan expressed hope that OTAKUKON will continue to develop as a platform for connecting communities and strengthening mutual understanding between Zimbabwe and Japan beyond geographical and cultural borders.

As interest in anime and manga continues to grow in Zimbabwe, events such as OTAKUKON can also provide opportunities for local illustrators, storytellers, animators, and other creatives to connect with international creative industries.
